Hair Growth Cycle
- Normal hair loss
is the result of the growth cycle of the follicles. When an old hair
dies, the growing phase starts again for a new hair to replace it. The
hair growth cycle has 3 different phases:
- Anagen: the growing phase
or the “on” phase, which lasts for an average of 1,000 days in the
human scalp, but can range from 2 – 6 years. During the anagen phase,
hair cells proliferate rapidly. The hair shafts grows in diameter and
the hair shaft reaches maximum length
- Catagen: it is the transitional or regressive phase
before the resting phase starts. During this phase, changes may
occasionally be seen above the skin surface with the naked eye: e.g.
loss of pigment and the narrowing of the hairshaft accompanied by a
narrowing and eventual loss of the medulla. During this short period of
change (approximately 2 weeks) the follicle rests the dermal papilla
stops production of new cells, the dentrites and melanocytes contract
and melanin production ceases. The follicle and epithelial sheath
contract and the hairshaft is rejected
- Telogen: the resting phase of the follicle which
lasts for approximately four months. A new hair in the anagen phase
develops and forces the old telogen hair out. This is when hair is lost
and you might notice them in the bath or in your brush or comb
Causes for Thinning Hair & Poor Scalp?
Hair thinning can be caused by various effects such as hormonal
changes, genetics , stress, medication, poor nutritional and low
vitamin diet, or by pulling or plucking the hair.
Dr.
D Trichology is developed to fight thinning hair and scalp problems
through nutrition and follicle condition; targeting the following
problems:
The growth cycle:
If
the growth (Anagen) phase becomes shorter, hair might not grow for long
enough to become visible on the scalp before it falls out, and thinning
hair occurs. It is therefore important to try to restore the Anagen to
Telogen ratio back to normal levels, increasing hair re-growth over
time and help reduce thinning hair
Scalp Aging:
Poor scalp condition can contribute towards thinning hair and
receding hairlines. The scalp ages like your skin and the tissue
surrounding the hair bulb can become rigid and inflexible. As a result
the hair is no longer properly rooted in place, and it may drop out
more easily, and can be more difficult for new hair follicles to grow.
Furthermore, when the scalp ages it becomes thinner. This results in
less blood supply being able to reach the hair follicles, reducing the
amount of oxygen and nutrition needed for the follicle to remain
healthy.
Blocked Follicles:
Follicles can become blocked with various kinds of build-ups, such as
detritus from conditioners, oil and other shampoos. This causes hair
that grows from the follicle to become thinner.
